Consultation on a 20mph speed limit for Newton Abbot

by Jackie Hook on 10 November, 2021

A consultation is currently underway to decide whether to go ahead with a pilot 20mph speed limit in Newton Abbot.

The link below takes you to a short questionnaire and there is also an interactive map where you can make comments about the extent of the 20mph speed limit. The consultation is open until November 25th.

Consultation on Newton Abbot 20mph scheme launches

The proposal originates from a DCC Task Group that took place in 2019 which was in response to the massive number of complaints that councillors across Devon are receiving about speeding issues in their towns and villages. Many towns and cities in the country already have 20mph limits, Bristol being but one example.

Evidence of their success is widespread ( https://www.20splenty.org/20mph_vfm )

, but DCC felt they wanted to trial it first before possibly rolling it out into other towns and villages in the County. Arguably this is not necessary given the overwhelming positive evidence from the rest of the country.

It would be great if as many people as possible took the time to fill in the questionnaire and comment on the map. Whatever mode of travel you use most or if you live outside the town and only visit, you are urged to take part in the consultation. This is not a done deal, whatever your view , you need to respond to the consultation , and the decision on the proposal going ahead, or detail of how it is implemented will be adjusted according to public comments.
