Advance Notice Ringslade Rd Closure

by Jackie Hook on 1 February, 2019

Advance notice that between March – July 2019, Ringslade Rd, will be closed, for enabling works that are required to be carried out in advance of the main phase 1 A382 widening scheme.

The extents of the works stretch approximately 150m south from the A382 along Ringslade Road which includes widening the carriageway providing verges, kerbing, drainage, signage and a new bridge culvert over the Blatchford Brook.

During the closure the proposed diversion route between the A382 and Highweek will be along Exeter Road, Ashburton Road, Pitt Hill Road and Coombeshead Road.

Any queries , please get in touch with me.

    Hi Jackie
I live in that road disaster area in the narrows at the top of Coombeshead Road. I’m e-mailing to ask if you know, when exactly, will Ringslade Road be shut. I thought it was supposed to be today 29.04.19 but obviously not. I’m aware that the Ashburton Road is ongoing so the village ‘rat runners’ will be turning down Coombeshead until it’s completion.

    Kind regards

Hello John, I thought it was today too. It is very frustrating that they don’t stick to the publicised dates. I’ll try and find out what’s going on and get back to you.

Sign at bottom of the main road today said from 1st May.

So it’s soon!! I’m hoping it will give the village some peace and the annoying inconsiderate rat runners will stop coming through here for a few months.

John, the works on Ringslade Rd have been postponed again due to the need for further works on the junction of Exeter Rd and Teigngrace Rd, to remove island, put in road markings and anti skid surface. Closure now from May 7th.

    Hi Jackie,

Any news in when this will re open?
With all the additional roadworks in Newton its just a disaster.

    Thank you

Hi Rebecca, Sept 13th is the published reopening date on roadworks.org . There are those of course that are very much appreciating the closure, for example those that live in Ringslade Rd and Highweek Village who have contacted me asking me if I can arrange to keep the closure! A clear case of it being “impossible to please all the people all the time”. Just to warn that there will be ongoing works and temporary traffic lights on the whole length of the A382 for at least the next year due to widening of the road and addition of a shared use cycle/footway along its length. It’s my route to work as well, and I’m anticipating leaving earlier for work most days for the next year, and being later home. Ultimately we will have a road, and shared use path fit for purpose for many years to come.

    Hello,
I live in Highweek and whilst I appreciate the reduced traffic through Highweek, I currently find trying to get anywhere at all around Newton Abbot frustrating and stressful. The only thing which has made it remotely bearable through the summer has been the lack of school traffic, but if course that will change next week. The current level of disruption is an absolute joke. How on earth has it been allowed to have so many works happening all at once? There seems to be no clear indication of an end in sight as new information now suggests Ringslade Road won’t reopen until October and judging by the comments this is also just the tip of the iceberg. It’s directly impacting on residents’ quality of life and no one seems to give a monkeys. No one I know is happy about it.

      Hello Naomi,
I appreciate that there are several sets of roadworks that have been taking place on our side of Newton Abbot for some time now. It’s no consolation to you I’m sure but I live on the Barton Drive side of Ashburton Rd so am experiencing the same issues, and am well aware of them. The current lights at Jetty Marsh / Exeter Rd are due to the upgrading of a gas pipeline for the new Whitehill development. The shared use cycleway works along Ashburton Rd are nearing an end. Works on the A382 road will be ongoing for 2 years or so, whilst it is widened and upgraded. Tomorrow at Planning Committee we make a decision on the link road between the A382 and A383. The vast majority of road works in our area are due to house building pressure. I hope you are familiar with our campaign to urge the govt to reduce the demands they are putting on us to build houses. At the moment they are not listening to our pleas. The sheer volume of works required means that we can’t wait for one set of works to finish before the next start. However, I have been timing myself at the lights. Those at jetty Marsh take an average of 2-4 minutes to get through during normal hours. The longest I have waited is 17 minutes coming in from Bovey direction. I have since come in via Liverton – Ashburton Rd direction smoothly and without delay. It may interest you to know that thee is a growing campaign in Highweek for a permanent closure of Ringslade Rd, in recognition of the reduced rat running that has occurred while it is closed, and a desire to keep the village free from that. There are in fact a divergence of opinions about the future for the village. But as a long term commuter to Bovey area, I can report that my journey too and from work is quicker now even with lights than it was 10 years ago. Works at Drumbridges and the S Devon Link Rd have both improved the journey time on the A382 corridor. If you wish to know when roadworks are planned you can register with roadworks.org and get email updates.

        Hi Jackie,
Thank you for your response. Reduced housing pressure is something I am fully in support of. I would mind the housing less if a higher proportion were genuinely affordable but the majority seem to be aimed at a more affluent market. I’m not sure that I would support a permanent closure of Ringslade Road and I don’t support the link road being built in advance of other works being completed as this will unlock NA1 and mean even more housing and travel disruption. To be honest, the way things are, my family and I are counting down the days until we can afford to move out of the area – this is how much it’s depressing us. We live and work here, our children go to school locally, and we love the surrounding area but it seems that despite all of this we have no voice. Council tax just goes up every spring and garden waste collection has risen by 14% this summer.

Apologies for the rant and going off topic, but these are frustrating and miserable times in Newton Abbot and it has felt for a while that the Council (not necessarily you) have indulged in vanity projects and pandering to Westminster rather than representing their wards properly.
