A381 Wolborough Street, Newton Abbot

Work will take place between Wolborough Street traffic lights (Asda) and Ogwell Cross roundabout, Newton Abbot during the half-term week of 12 to 17 February 2018. The road will be closed 24hrs a day during this period with a diversion route advised for through traffic.

Carrying out the work during half-term will avoid disruption to the substantial number of school bus services which use this route.

What are we doing?

The section of road between Pomeroy Road and Waltham Road will be completely reconstructed and the road from Waltham Road to Beverley Gardens will have deep patching repairs to failed areas. The complete length of Pomeroy Road to Beverley Gardens will have a new surface laid.

Why do we need to close the road?

The total reconstruction of a section of this road means no traffic can use the road. The narrow width of the remainder of the site does not allow sufficient room for vehicles to pass the machines being used.

Why is there such along diversion route?

We have a duty to direct traffic along a similar standard of road to that being closed so that all vehicles, including large articulated vehicles, can safely use the diversion route. The proposed diversion route can be seen here.

Local traffic will undoubtedly use smaller roads around the work but these are limited and likely to become congested. We will not be signing a ‘local’ diversion due to the lack of suitable routes.

A pedestrian route around the work will be signed from Asda to Bakers Park using the existing off-street footway/cycleway.

Assistance will be provided at the closure points and within the work site to help residents and delivery vehicles within the closed section. Access will be maintained from one end or the other as work progresses.

What will happen to bus services?

The X64 Dartmouth to Exeter service will be diverted around the official diversion route.

Local Country Bus services to Totnes, Ipplepen, Abbotskerswell and Denbury are being discussed with the operators. There will be alternate services to cover these routes but details have not yet been finalised. This could mean an increase in journey times.
